Eagleton Success Story
Anthony Graduates, and Looks to the Future.
Anthony W. came to Eagleton School from Fairfax County, Virginia through his DFS social worker Albertine Atkins-Childress in January, 2007 and after almost 2 productive years successfully transitioned out of the program in December, 2008.
Anthony came to Eagleton with deep issues from abuse, abandonment, and neglect. At his time of arrival, he had no one in his life who could take care of him, and he was in state custody. He came to Great Barrington with feelings of anger and unworthiness, and with the sense that no one loved him, no one cared about him, and no one needed him.
When he first arrived at Eagleton, Anthony would feel anxious and angry and found ways to seek constant approval. Humor, along with clear requests and consistency, was an effective tool to help him recognize these patterns of behavior. Anthony started to create and build positive relationships with staff and students, as he recognized more and more about himself.
As time at Eagleton passed, Anthony’s negative and sad, angry attitude began to change with the help of many individuals at Eagleton who were consistent and therapeutic in their approach, and who proved through their actions that he did in fact have people who cared about him.
During his time at Eagleton, Anthony experienced a number of helpful people and programs that helped him overcome his traumas, including

When they have started to make great progress, most boys at Eagleton have an opportunity to take occasional home visits to see their friends and family. With no family to go home to, Anthony hadn't had a chance to spend time back in Virginia, despite good behavior and progress. Recognizing this, Joanne worked very closely with Albertine to set up a special day for him to visit Virginia to celebrate his birthday. They planned a day of adventure and fun; just to do something special for him. Anthony said this was an important day for him because two people went above and beyond what they had to do, just to make sure his birthday would be special. The trip to Virginia also gave Anthony an opportunity to reconnect with a few familiar faces and to envision a possible transition for his future.
Anthony continued to blossom and progress, to the point where it became clear that he could successfully leave Eagleton and go back to his community for the next phase of his life. Facilitated by great cooperative efforts made by Albertine and Joanne, a plan was put together for Anthony to transition back to Virginia. Joanne then went to Virginia again to visit a program which consisted of Independent Living with supports, and a future apartment and an opportunity for him to finish high school and then from there to go to college from very close by. Joanne had the wonderful opportunity to take him twice to Richmond in order to prepare him for his return. During this process, Joanne and Albertine became friends and Albertine expressed that she was very pleased with Eagleton and what it had done to help change Anthony’s life.
After Anthony transitioned to the program in Virginia, he then was able to complete his schooling, graduate from the program and receive his High School diploma six months after his return. Joanne flew down and met up with Albertine to attend the graduation and celebration. Anthony is now currently looking for a summer job and looking into a community college… to eventually go to a four year college.
We are happy to acknowledge and congratulate recent Eagleton students, Kyle J. from Worcester, MA and Aaron P. from Fairfax, VA, who transitioned home and went on to graduate from high school.
