Non Abusive Psychological and Physical Intervention (NAPPI)

Eagleton School utilizes a behavior management/intervention model produced by NAPPI, Inc. (Non-Abusive Psychological and Physical Intervention) developed to create and maintain a culture of trust, influence, and non-violence. Since 1977 NAPPI, Inc. has trained over 65,000 individuals in various management positions to work with difficult behaviors in a safe, quick, and effective manner. NAPPI is currently being utilized in special education and private schools, public schools, community mental health centers, residential long-term care facilities, psychiatric hospitals, and medical centers. NAPPI has been reviewed and approved by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) and the Massachusetts Department of Education (DOE).

Most behaviors are predictable, and individuals who can recognize the precipitants of behavior can intervene and prevent the behavior. The three components of NAPPI are assessment, prevention, and physical management. NAPPI teaches a culture of partnership within the community which leads to increased safety in that community. NAPPI teaches children the skills to affect their own environmental controls and assists them in developing processes and controls that help them make positive choices. Understanding that extreme behaviors do occur, and recognizing that prevention of injury is the prime goal of any behavioral management system, NAPPI also includes components of communication skills, early interventions, de-escalation skills, techniques of defusing unsafe behavior, and non-violent, physical management of dangerous behavior. NAPPI has been approved by all appropriate state agencies.
