Organic Horticulture

garden-planting2A beautiful greenhouse and gardens show off the results of this unique undertaking. Not just a garden, this seed-to-harvest educational and vocational program inspires and encourages growth and independence, as well as provides an environment for students to begin to understand the concept of interdependence.

The Organic Horticulture Program emphasizes the use of small hand tools and organic gardening methods, and provides students with the opportunity to experience the growing process from seed to harvest. The seed to harvest program is designed to stimulate interest in healthy relationships with food, self, others, and the earth through the organic method of gardening.

Using the language of nature and metaphor, an opportunity is created for students to understand that the cycles and process of their natural surroundings are analogous to their own life process. An example: plants stay rooted in the face of storms, as our roots in family, community, and the natural world allow us to nurture ourselves and to not only survive the challenging storms of our lives, but to thrive. The goal of this program is to foster healthy relationships, a sense of health and well-being, to deepen students’ connection with their life processes, and to help them prepare vocationally for however they choose to use their gift of life
